City Sounds 1994
Although Kyra had recorded numerous trial tracks for a number
of writers by the time she was age 16, “City Sounds”
showed to be the best opportunity for Recording experience. Despite
the growing need to produce and record her own material, she accepted
‘Jonny Varcoe’s’ offer and in 1994 joined what
would become “City Sounds.” Kyra co-wrote/produced
an album of smooth dance tracks; she was pleased to find herself
placed firmly in the Bristol music scene.
After spending 5 months in the studio, T.V Records released the
debut single, “Sweet Paradise” into the independent
chart along with a huge amount of promotional gigs including top
Bristol Clubs like the ‘Fleece&Firkin’ renown
for hosting up and coming bands; ‘Stringfellos’ London,
‘Ashton Court’ and ‘St Paul’s’ Festivals
would all follow. HTV featured “City Sounds” on a
30-minute program where Kyra talked exclusively about the making
of the album and the planned release of the single “East
To West.”
“East To West” Kyra took solely under her wing and
brought to it a sound so distinctive that it was hard to categorize.
Despite Kyra’s intent on it being the ‘new’
sound, “East To West” did not get released however,
the unique sound would ironically fit into place with today’s
market. Kyra sang live selected tracks from the album over three
other Television appearances and took interviews talking about
the enjoyment being involved with an independent album. Despite
it being fairly low budget, record sales hit the thousands and
fans eagerly awaited the release of “East To West,”
which was becoming the focus of much hype and good publicity for
it’s powerful vocals and a musical style that can only now
perhaps, be described as ‘Dido-Esque.’
“….it’s been a great project to work on and
a great experience. I don’t really think they expected a
17yrs girl to be as dedicated and creative as I’ve been.
This is what I’ve always wanted but lot’s more hard
work will equal success and ‘East To West’ will get
its time…and hopefully so will I.” K.Bernice 1994.
