Dead Girl On Earth 2004
Are you wondering where the real talent is, or if there’s
any at all these days? Do you find it sad when true talent rocket to stardom only after they die?
Well here is…“Dead Girl On Earth.”
At the beginning of 2002, Kyra wrote “Early
Song,” a ‘love lost’ song with a delicate
Country feel. It would mark the beginning of her very first original album. After much discussion about whether
or not to bring in additional hands to assist and speed up the recording,
Kyra took the categorical decision to singly take on the task at
her home-based studio in Bristol, with only her Partner/Sound Engineer
Mark Radford stepping in when she often inevitably run out of hands!
All in all, it took just under a year for Kyra to write, record
and mix 15 tracks of which 12 are featured on the album.
Not wanting to rush into things, Kyra took some
time out to think about the intention behind the album. Inaugural
albums are often fairly personal for a writer, so Kyra distinguished
that this should be her approach given that she, after all, was
doing it alone and already had a huge amount of material directed
at themes closer to home. Kyra began writing the songs and playing
them acoustically at selected ‘open mic’ evenings to
test the reception and also gain some sort of insight into how they
would finally be constructed.
Kyra’s style of writing is sometimes described
as fairly cryptic however; all 12 tracks are extremely adaptable
and will present many different perspectives for the listener. “Freda”
was the second written: an acoustic song about holding onto memories.
Kyra considered naming it “Dear Freda,” as this is what
you find at the beginning of every entry in her personal diaries. “Morn’
To Night” came next with its Reggae/Egyptian sound
and is about doing what you can to avoid the perils of dreams. “So
True And Quite New,” is an alternative rock sound
relating to the annoyance of naiveté and the constant awareness
of a better, more realistic place. “Fairy For Mary”
is very melodic and dedicated to Kyra’s Grandmother. She incorporated
her Grandmother’s favorite songs into the lyrics.
“Blame The Flame” followed: a contemporary
sound focusing on decaying relationships with people you care deeply
for. “Just Cos’”
is a somewhat jovial song which in itself metaphorically underlines
the deception of making things look fine when they are not. “How Cold Love Is,” is
a love song with a Country feel however, “Silent Speaking”
followed with its haunting underground sound and addresses the common
concept of life being a dream, but with a twist. Finally, “Eyes
Of Age,” played acoustically. This is a truly heart
felt and personal song about Kyra’s perception of life from
childhood to adulthood.
“If Only,” with its
Northern American touch was written by Kyra however, previously
co-recorded/produced by Darren Simms and Phil Hennessey (“Common
People”) along with “Dead Girl On Earth,”
a song close to Kyra’s heart as it was written at just age
12. It was re-recorded to keep it more in key with Kyra’s
style, given that it would feature as the title track of the album;
and how you adapt that song, is entirely up to you!
The distinguished debut album by “Kyra Bernice”
that many will no doubt be eager to get their hands on!
Kyra will be lining up promotional gigs for “Dead
Girl On Earth” and posting regular updates on what’s
happening.
